Museum Week, 23-29 March 2015

By Monzie Estate | Blog

In honour of Museum Week we’ve put together our top 5 local museums.  Get involved and celebrate the local culture.

  • Discover Scotland’s oldest free, public lending library: a museum where you can literally touch the past.  Get your head stuck in a book at Innerpeffray library – history and literature lovers will be intrigued.
  • Learn more about the former city of Scotland and visit Perth Museum and Art Gallery, you won’t be disappointed.  It’s lovely and quite fascinating with a fantastic collection of objects, which reflects nicely the history of the local area.
  • The small, volunteer-led museum at Dunblane Cathedral gives an interesting and well presented insight into the area and the events that have occurred around Dunblane.  This little hidden treasure is definitely worth an hour of your time.
  • The Beatrix Potter Exhibition and Garden is perfect for a family day out.  It’s a delightful little place to discover the links that Beatrix Potter had to the local area.  You’ll thoroughly enjoy walking through the idyllic Beatrix Potter Garden to visit Mrs Tiggy Winkle in her house.  Watch out for Mr Fox, and of course see if you can find Peter Rabbit himself!
  • Don’t go to Callander without visiting the Hamilton Toy Collection.  With an amazing collection of toys from the last hundred years, the wonderful memories of your childhood will come flooding back.

Of course, we have our very own museum right here.  Monzie Castle is a large castellated mansion which incorporates a small early 17th-century L-plan tower house.  Wander around the picturesque grounds visiting the formal garden which is attached to the tower house.  The castle is open to visitors during 16 May – 14 June; Daily, 2pm-4.30pm.

Hello Spring!

Woods on Monzie Estate with bluebells

Woods on Monzie Estate with bluebells – Spring 2014

Hello Spring!  We’ve missed your green grass, warm sunshine and beautiful flowers.

Winter is behind us now, and we’re welcoming the signs of Spring here at Monzie.  Spring flowers are coming into bloom and the estate is going to be bursting with colour as the landscape comes alive.

Spring is the time for plans and projects, and our project for Spring is well under-way.  Our most recently renovated cottage is really coming together now, and almost at the stage of soft furnishings to be put in place. How exciting!  We’ll upload more photos as soon as we can, but in the meantime isn’t Gardener’s Cottage beautiful. A bright and spacious, idyllic hideaway which will be available in late Spring (contact us if you’re interested in staying here!).

The clocks Spring forward on Sunday night giving us more daylight in the evening. Ahh, getting home from work and spending the longer lighter evenings in the garden.  After the cold, wet winter we’re looking forward to a trip to Bennybeg Plant Centre to choose some delightful plants and for our big Spring frenzy in the garden.
Sunshine and warmer breezes are headed our way, so throw open the windows and let the fresh air in.

Solar Eclipse – Friday 20 March, 2015

By Monzie Estate | Blog

solar_eclipse_ipad_backgroundPick a beautiful location on the grounds of our estate to enjoy the dramatic atmosphere of the Eclipse.  The next one won’t be until 12 August 2026, so take the chance to see this rare sight.

It will begin about 8am, so come along early with a flask of morning coffee and stay long enough to see the Diamond Ring – one of the most iconic images witnessed during the last few seconds.  The estate is also the perfect location to experience how the wildlife are affected by sudden darkness – watch them scamper off to find shelter and protection.

Easy peasy (lemon squeezy)

By Monzie Estate | Blog

We welcome our holiday guests with a delightful hamper full of goodies to get you started.  Being lovers of lemon curd we tried a fantastic easy-peasy recipe and we’re sure our guests will love it.  Loads better than any shop-bought jar we’ve ever tried.  You should give it a go at home – we found that it was so deliciously thick that we didn’t need the cornflour.

Weekend Woodland Walk

By Monzie Estate | Blog

We spent the weekend clearing one of the woodland paths on the estate.  This path was David’s favourite when he was growing up,  so he was really keen to clear all the fallen trees and branches so our guests can enjoy it too.

We hope to welcome a forager to Monzie this year.  Wouldn’t it be great to pick the wild garlic, mushrooms and all the gorgeous edible flowers that are in abundance around the estate, and use it in our recipes at home.
